Hello ladies and gents! Fall is finally here. How do I know? Besides the chilly weather and changing color of the leaves, we can take our cue from Starbucks, as I’m sure you’ve noticed the infamous pumpkin spice flavor has made its long awaited debut! And along with pumpkin spice and salted caramel mochas, comes excess calories and increased pant size. BUT it doesn’t have to be so!
Today I’ll be sharing a secret “off the menu” recipe from Starbucks. As a Starbucks barista for over 3 years, and self-proclaimed coffee connoisseur, I’ve learned some interesting ways to cut the calories, without sacrificing yummy flavors (like pumpkin spice) that I love! I’ll be sharing 1 of my favorite tweaks below, to help you cut 75% calories, while still indulging in some epic fall flavors.
Not a LATTE Calories – The New Pumpkin Spice!
Pumpkin spice – you either love it, or hate it. And pretty much everyone I know LOVES it. But did you know that if you ordered a grande pumpkin spice latte, you’d be adding 380 calories to your pants and taking away $5 from your pocket? Let’s cut the calories (and the cash!) with this simple tweak.
How to Order:
“I’d like a Grande coffee with 1 pump of pumpkin spice. Please add an inch of milk (I usually choose almond or coconut.)”
The result? This coffee costs only $2.45 (usually the barista won’t charge you for 1 pump) and the “inch” of milk is always free. Not only does it taste a LOT like a latte, it is much cheaper! Now to the juicy stuff…how many calories will you save? A whopping 340 calories! So, ordering this way, your morning coffee will be only 40 calories. I like to add 1 Splenda and top with cinnamon and chocolate powder, so it still tastes a little sweet. I feel a round of applause and a standing ovation coming on…
Nutritionist Hack !
Avoid added sugar and calories by using Pumpkin Pie Spice instead of pumps of flavor! You can get a shaker of spice at Trader Joes for $2.99 (seriously – there is no shame in carrying it in your gym bag during PSL season)!
Bonus: Add Pumpkin Pie spice to your fall favorites & breakfast: waffles, pancakes, smoothies, oatmeal and more to keep it healthy, simple and flavorful.
